Dear Professor Freud,

«IP4,0»Enclosed is a document from Putnam, and a letter from Hamill, which he asked me to forward, not having your address; he is a member of the American group, but I know little of him, as he was able to attend only one meeting, his chief, Dr. Patrick, being always away at that time.

I have heard from Abraham; he gives me the light task of reviewing the |×/ progress in characterology for the «MDUL»Jahrbuch«MDNM».«FN1.××This did not appear in the «MDUL»Jahrbuch«MDNM».»  From Mrs. Eder I hear that Jung has decided not to found a new journal, but has arranged with Deuticke to publish a series of books or brochures.«FN1.××See Lisa Ress, «MDUL»General Bibliography of C. G. Jung's Writings«MDNM» (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1979, p. 15 ff.).

»  Sonst nichts neues.

It was a great pleasure seeing you again personally, and also hearing the fresh ideas.  I intend to make regular pilgrimages to Vienna every year at least.  Meeting the other men was also of course very enjoyable, and the whole time was profitable.

In the masochism theory there is still a piece not clear to me, which perhaps you will explain.  Whence comes the algolagnic«FN1.××Sexual excitement in causing or experiencing pain.» phantasies, i.e. whence the pleasure, the wish, that comes to meet the disagreeable trauma, the fear of castration, and which elaborates the latter in so many disguises?  One must of course assume a constitutional basis, "feminitity", but it feels as though there is something else in between this and the castration idea.  Is it impossible that also here an overheard coitus is necessary (thus accounting for the connection between masochism and sadism), but reacted to in a different way from that characteristic of sadism?  A Zwangsneurotiker«MDUL»«MDNM» told me this morning he has a horror of women who have some defect, especially a missing hand or arm, or even lameness.  He connected it with his mother, who died of tuberculosis when he was five, but who had no deformity.  He had an undescended testicle and a small penis, and believed till he was 16 that he had been castrated, confounding castration with circumcision.  He has a great horror of blood, which makes him faint, which he connects with his mother's haemoptysis.«FN1.××Spitting of blood.»  His father was a drunkard,  rough and cruel.  That all hangs together well; in the manifest content he is decidedly masochistic.

I suggested to Ferenczi he should write for the «MDUL»Jahrbuch«MDNM» a paper on symbolism, theory, practice, and definition, taking perhaps six examples which could be illustrated from different fields, neurosis, dream, folklore, mythology, jokes,  etc..  No doubt he spoke to you about it.  What do you think of the plan?  We should of course all have to help him in collecting material.«FN1.××Jones himself published a lengthy paper on this topic (Jones, 1916a).  Ferenczi had already published a short piece called "Symbolism" which Jones was to translate (Ferenczi, 1912).

Please give my kind regards to your ladies, and accept my heartiest wishes for a Happy New Year and prosperous undertakings.

Yours always  Jones.
