Dear Professor,
«IP4,0»It is so wonderful here. If only you were here! There is so much to write about that I am surprised at my courage in attempting a letter, especially as unfortunately my health is very poor, so that there is little energy left. But it is good to feel near you again, with no censorship in between.
First business. Rank will bring Anna's things, which made half the 3O kilos allowed for travelling. Please ask her to write and thank Loe, who was rather disagreeable about it (wanted to know why Anna had not written to her personally with a list of what she wanted, etc.) and may be soothed thereby. Rank met me here on Saturday evening, to my very great joy. Today Sachs came. I spoke with Claparède in Geneva and heard about the two |×/ societies there, besides Zurich!«FN1.××A facetitious remark, as there were no formal psychoanalytic societies in Switzerland since the Zurich Society voted to withdraw from the International on 10 July 1914 in the wake of Jung's withdrawl from the Freudian movement. A new Swiss Society for Psychoanalysis was about to be formed on 24 March 1919. Jones would attend the inaugaral meeting as a guest. » We saw Bircher«FN1.××A Swiss publisher operating out of Bern.» today and will again on Wednesday, but I don't think anything will come of it. «MDUL»C'est un blagueur«MDNM». But I will leave all these explanations for Rank to give you, else there is no end. We go to Luzern Friday, Zurich Monday for the «MDUL»Sitzung«MDNM» [meeting], then all of us to Geneva. I brought you a new pen, and can easily get the old ones repaired in London and sent on. (The inconsequence of my thoughts go with the lightheadedness of a slight influenza, contracted while travelling).
Rank I find greatly improved, more independent, self‑confident, and manly. I admire his quick brain and sure judgement. We get on splendidly together, and I think you may feel safe in leaving things in our hands; we agree about everything and shall have done a great deal of business before we separate.
In the last week in London I got your 4th «MDUL»Sammlung«MDNM», with great delight, and read the two new articles«FN1.××Freud (1918a, 1918b).» (the rest I had all read before). There is so much to say about every one. It will interest you that I analysed a girl aged 9, who developed a wolf‑phobia at 4 and a «MDNM»Zwangsneurose at 7 (which of course exploited the phobia). She has remained cured now for two years. It was a good example of inf. totemism.
I was most interested in your letter about War Shock. There is so much to say about it. Ferenczi's paper I found disappointing, Abraham's very good descriptively, but deficient on the theoretical side. Simmel also has not much to say, but is no doubt useful propaganda.«FN1.××Ferenczi, Abraham, and Simmel were the other contributors to «MDUL»Zur Psychoanalyse der Kriegsneurosen«MDNM» (Leipzig, Vienna: Internationaler Psychoanalytischer Verlag, 1919).»
I shall hope to spend some of this year's holiday with you, if you allow.
With all good wishes Yours affectionately Ernest Jones.
