INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PSYCHO‑ANALYSIS
1 April 1921 London W1
Dear Professor:
«IP4,0»Many thanks for your letter of the 18th. Since then the Eder question has been settled otherwise, as I indicated in a Rundbrief. I know she would not go to Rank ‑‑ I asked her ‑‑ but I may be able to find other patients for him.
Thank you for the Daly analysis which I will send on to Hiller for the «MDUL»Journal«MDNM». I saw him during his passage through London and found him quite obviously improved, more balanced and grown up. But I am not too enthusiastic about his becoming an analyst.
I was very interested in your remarks about the Americans, which quite tallies with my impressions. Don't you think there is a relation between the lack of «MDUL»Gemeinsinn«MDNM» among the successful ones, their fondness for individualism, and just their success? I mean that the quality they lack seems to be related to pressure from without, whether national as with the Jews, Swiss and Celts, or due to other reasons for external unpopularity such as Ps‑A. The native‑born American feels strong enough without the help of his fellows.
I have observed like you the tendency of our young writers to make such remarks as "the interpretation is obvious", but I think the tendency is not so much one of social discretion as the fear most young writers have to write what they think may be elementary, what other people already know quite well. Is not this the reason why young lecturers are so difficult to follow? It is only assured authorities that dare to be elementary. But in any case I must check the tendency.
Will you be good enough to look through a long article by Berkeley‑Hill I am sending to Hiller, from the point of view of its suitability for the «MDUL»Journal«MDNM».«FN1.××O. Berkeley‑Hill, "The Anal‑Erotic Factor in the Religion, Philosophy and Character of the Hindus," «MDUL»Journal«MDNM», 2(1921):306‑338.
» If we do not print the "«MDUL»Jenseits«MDNM»" there, and Rank seems very much against this, we shall need more material, and I should like to publish B_H's article. It is on anal‑eroticism as a character trait among the Hindoos, especially in their religion. Although it has some good Psa comments in it, its value is more from the interesting material he adduces. It is praiseworthy that he should work so hard amid great difficulties and isolation.
I am writing to Rank about the very complicated question of your English translations and rights, and no doubt he will discuss it further with you.
We had a very enjoyable Easter in the country, and I hope you had the same. We spoke of the hope we still cherish of seeing you here some day and of showing you something of our beautiful English countryside, with also what is to be seen within easy reach at Oxford, Winchester, and so on.
Yours always affectionately Ernest Jones
