    Dear Friends:

The main news from here is that two new psycho-analytical societies have
been started, which have approached us with a view to contact (? affiliation).
One is a group of doctors in a large hospital at Newcastle, and they sent a
case-study as a specimen of their work; it was mediocre but on right lines.
The other group is a of teachers, mostly in connection with University Coll-
ege, Cardiff, who meet at Porth, a small town in South Wales. I answered en-
couragingly and invited an official to call on me here and give me further
information about their work and attitude, but I should be glad of your
views as to their relation with the British and International Associations,
provided of course that after inquiry they prove to be bona fide.

On the other hand I have just received the programme of the annual meeting
of the American Psychopathological Association, which used to be almost excl-
usively psa, and am sorry to say that it is less so than formerly. Janet and
others of this kind are speaking. The Symposium, opened by McDougall, is on
the relation between ego-, herd-, and sex- instincts (MacFie Campbell
a very lukewarm adherent of ours speaks on the last of these).

Glover is forming a sub-committee at the Clinic which will probably
meet ours to discuss the possibility of amalgamation. The only doubtful
point will be over the question of lay analysts, about which there is great

opposition among the medical profession here (probably a Verschiebung from
other objections to Psa, quackery, etc).

Berlin. The proposal to report the protocol is an interesting one. I only
hope they will appear in the Zeitschrift, for it seems to be better to en-
large the latter than to publish so many little separate things.

Best thanks for the friendly invitation to visit your Policlinic. I will
do my best to do so, though it is doubtful if I can manage time. It dep-
ends partly on whether I decide to accept an invitation to speak at the Brit
ish Association at Edinburgh in the middle of September.

Budapest. Please thank Róheim and the others cordially for the kind letter
they sent to me on the occasion of your Totemfest. I saw Picker this week and
am doing what I can for him.

Wien. Pfister sent Barbara Low a letter containing similar news to yours
from Oberholzer, about Oczeret, etc. Mysticism is never very far from its
    extreme opposite!

The editor of L’Encephale, the leading French Journal of psychiatry, sent
me an agreeable letter, speaking of increasing French interest in Psa. Var-
endonck is negotiating about a French translation of some of my writings.

I quite agree with your remarks about the order of reviews in the Z and
J, and see no reason why we should make a single exception in favour of For-
    syth.

Yes, my remarks about left-sidedness referred only to hysteria, although
I have also worked out the question in the case of all the organic hemi-
plegias also (with the same result).

I have also written to Stern in the editorial matter in Professor’s sense.

    With cordial greetings

    Ernest Jones.
