Dear Friends:

I cannot answer Abraham’s question about the Christmas holiday letters, for I do not 
know what arrangements you are all making as to dates of holidays, so it will be best if 
each group separately decides which letter they will omit, either Dec. 21 or Jan. 1st.

Jung’s article in the Brit. Journ. of Psychology is written in a hateful manner 
against us, with the usual outside objections to the immorality of reducing our patients 
to infantile sexuality, but it is not worth while to go into details. On the other hand 
there is an intelligent, witty and breezy paper in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology by 
Wheeler, Prof. of Entomology at Harvard, greeting Psa favourably from the biological 
side. I have written and asked him if he would write an article for us.

I have found in Havelock Ellis an interesting linguistic confirmation of the connect-
ion between sexuality and breastfeeding, which may not be known to you all. It is that 
the popular Spanish name for vulva is »papo«, derived from Latin papare, to eat soft food.

I wonder what Abraham, with his modesty about the preface to Delgado’s book, would 
say to my boldness in accepting the task this week of writing prefaces to two of Profess-
or’s translations, the Vorlesungen and Leonardo. I enclose copies of them in the Vienna 
letter. Kegan Paul has bought the English rights of Brill’s translation of the latter.
Berlin. In the event of Bjerre’s applying to me about attending the Congress what attitude 
would you advise me to adopt? For my part I should be inclined to refuse.
Budapest. Rightly or wrongly, I have not the same feeling of secrecy as you appear to 
have, my dear Ferenczi, about scientifc ideas, provided of course that precautions are

taken from the point of view of priority. I only tentatively suggested to our members 
that they investigate cases of protection to see how many were truly such and how many 
instances of unconscious perception of the truth.

Vienna. My best congratulations to Professor on the Dutch honour. The remarkable thing 
was that, according to van Emden, it was Winkler, the fierce opponent, who proposed 
him. Another sign of the time.

Ch. Ladame has written a psa of Maupassant, along, it is true, Adlerian lines. Will 
you review it for the Zeitschr.? (Edition de la Revue Romande, Lausanne). 

It is a good sign of the interest in Psa that a new edition of the large IV Folge 
of the Sammlungen is called for, since it did not sell well at first.

Is the article in the American Nation worth my seeing?

From Abraham’s former question and Rank’s recent answer there seems to be a misunderstanding 
about the German subscriptions going to the London Cassa. Do you not remember that last 
Spring we decided that it was not worth while to do this, and Abraham (or was it perhaps 
Sachs) was appointed Treasurer for the Central States?

In case I have not enough to write about again before Xmas I send you all Xmas
