15th October 1925
Dear Friends,
Our first thought must be one of sympathy with the trial through which
Abraham has recently been passing. I am sure that none of us has a more
urgent wish than that he should make a rapid and complete recovery from his
unfortunate illness.
Róheim’s lectures here, also the paper which he read before the Royal
Anthropological Institute, proved very stimulating. We were glad to note that
he has passed beyond his birth-trauma phase.
At our annual business meeting last week, the same officers were
elected. Mr. Tansley was promoted to be a full member, the name of one
associate member who had recently written an unsatisfactory book was omitted
and two new associate members were elected. Following the instructions of the
Congress, we elected an Education Committee of five, consisting of the four
directors of the Institute (Bryan, Glover, Rickman and myself) with the
addition of Flügel.
The fourth volume of the “Collected Papers” has been slightly delayed
by the labour of preparing an Index of the four volumes. Bryan completed this
during his holidays and I have just corrected the proofs, so that the volume
should appear in another two or three weeks.
The October number of the Journal should also appear within the same
time.
I was glad to hear from Eitingon that he and Professor have persuaded
Storfer to withdraw his resignation. Ferenczi and I expected at the Congress that
this would happen. Will Sachs please give us the latest news about the film?
What has happened about the Bernfeld film?
For two months a heated polemic on psycho-analysis, directed against
Tansley, has appeared in the weekly columns of the “Nation”, the most active
participants being Wohlgemuth and McBride. The last number, however, contained
a most excellent letter from an ex-patient of Glover’s, a severe case of
melancholia which he had cured after three years’ analysis. The patient, being
a scientific man, was able to put the case clearly and strongly.
With best greetings and wishes for success in the coming session,
Yours always,
Ernest Jones
