Translator’s Foreword
I wish to express my great indebtedness to my friends
and colleagues, Dr. Charles O. Fiertz and Dr. Bertram D.
Lewin, for the unstinting assistance they have given me
in the many and valuable suggestions which they, to-
gether also with Dr. Dorian Feigenbaum and Dr. Sandor
Rado, have been kind enough to make–suggestions
which, as I am gratefully aware, are responsible for much
of whatever merit this translation may possess. Acknowl-
edgment is no less due to Dr. Feigenbaum, Editor-in-
Chief of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly, in that it was he
who conceived the idea, and made possible the accom-
plishment, of a new translation of one of Freud’s major
works.HENRY ALDEN BUNKER

Translator’s Foreword
I wish to express my thanks to my friends, O. Strachey, D. Radestock
and D. Griesinger, who have been kind enough to read my
manuscript and whose valuable suggestions are responsible for many
improvements. I also wish to thank many persons, whose names it is
impossible to mention, for their help in the preparation of this
translation of one of Freud’s major ‘Schriften’ and for their
valuable ideas which have convinced me of the need for a new translation
of one of Freud’s major ‘Schriften’.Henry Alden Bunker
