Dear Professor,

«IP4,0»Thank you very much for sending me the new book which appeared sooner than you had expected in September.«FN1.××Freud (1927c).

»  I found it most interestingly written and need hardly say that I am in accord with every word of it.  I trust I may assume that you will give us the translation rights.  Rickman is writing to the Verlag on the business side of this.  The Hogarth Press is willing to bring out the translation at once, especially as it will be of topical interest in view of the religious controversy now going on in England started by the Bishop of Birmingham.  It is not over his views on evolution, which are generally accepted by the clergy, but over his talk on the Catholic influence in the Church of England in which he points to the anthropological origin of belief in Transsubstantiation at the Mass.«FN1.××Ernest William Barnes (1874‑1953), English clergyman, Cambridge mathematician, Fellow of the Royal Society, and Bishop of Birmingham since 1924, whose controversial book «MDUL»Should Such a Faith Offend?«MDNM» (London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1927) upset the conservative‑minded and especially the Archbishop of Canterbury, Randall Davidson.  In Jones (1957a, p. 138; 1957b, pp. 146‑147) this episode is linked to the urgency of translating Freud (1927c).

»  I have found a new translator, a man of literature who has been a patient with me for three years, but both Strachey and I will revise the translation as well.«FN1.××Freud (1927c), trans. W. D. Robson‑Scott 1928. »

Ad Gegensinn der Urwörter«MDUL»«MDNM»:«FN1.××Jones echoes Freud (1910e).

»  '«MDUL»Nebe«MDNM»' in Middle High German signifies both 'nephew' and 'uncle'.«FN1.××"Nebe" in the standard Middle High German dictionaries is synonymous with "Neve" ‑‑ or "Neffe" in modern German ‑‑ and means "nephew."  The source for Jones's assertion is not clear. »

With kindest regards,  Yours always,  Ernest Jones
