Dear Professor,
«IP4,0»I had written to Eitingon and Anna to get news of your health, but without success, so it was a shock to hear from your letter that you had had such an unpleasant experience as broncho‑pneumonia. It tests the strength of the heart, and it is gratifying to see from the tone of your letter how successfully you have overcome the strain.
Your kind remark about the «MDUL»Journal«MDNM» is encouraging and I will transmit it to Mrs. Riviere who is always in despair at what she calls our low achievements (the «MDUL»Zeitschrift«MDNM» she thinks has sunk to hopeless depths!). The missing numbers will at once be forwarded to you (of course at our expense). I think you will find that each of the supplements represents some very solid work.
Things are proceeding here quietly and satisfactorily. We have sixteen candidates in training ‑‑ as many as our small numbers can manage ‑‑ and some of them are of very good quality. We do not make much outside propaganda. This week I read at the Society a paper on the | / of Chess, which I will send to «MDUL»Imago«MDNM».«FN1.××Jones (1931a).
» Tomorrow I am lecturing at Oxford on | / and Religion,«FN1.××Jones (1930b).
» and want to write a book on this.«FN1.××This project was not completed.» At present I am engaged on a book '«MDUL»On the Nightmare«MDNM»', about twice the size of my old «MDUL»Alptraum«MDNM».«FN1.××Jones (1931b, 1912j).
» I wonder if the Deuticke '«MDUL»Schriften«MDNM»' series has come to an end? Perhaps it has been replaced by the 'Imago Bücher'. Because one section in my book ‑‑ a |×/al study on etymology ‑‑ entitled 'Die Mahre und die Mähre' might make a suitable number for such a series.«FN1.××See "The Mare and the Mara: A Psycho‑Analytical Contribution to Etymology," in Jones (1931b, pp. 241‑340).
» The Verlag is considering a book by my wife 'Gesprächbuch für Psychoanalytiker'«FN1.××This was not published by the Verlag.
» which should be useful for furthering communication between German and English speaking analysts. She is very well and extraordinarily happy with the new baby, who is a huge success ‑‑ healthy, sweet‑dispositioned and intelligent. I enclose a few photos taken in August by Mme. Laforgue.
With all good wishes for continued recovery in strength and with my kindest regards to you and your family
Yours always affectionately Ernest Jones
