Dear Professor Freud,

«IP4,0»I fear you must have been going through a bad time this spring; it will surely be the worst, so that soon times must mend.  I want to know your plans as soon as you are able to make them.  Shall you go to Switzerland or where, and when?  I did not want to break practice again in June ‑‑ you know how serious that is ‑‑ then back in July and off again in August, but of course I want to see you as soon as it can be managed ‑‑ July or August.

I have now got full material from America for Putnam's memoir,«FN1.××Jones (1919).» which I will soon write and send you at the end of May, after Peace is signed.  His daughter likes to think that he was drifting from |×/, but that was not true ‑‑ only that in his last years his own thoughts on philosophy became more insistent.

In England we are now in the stage that America was in in 1913 ‑‑ everyone talks of |×/.  In America it has become a little passé for the sensationalist!  These are curious phases.  The surprising and sad thing is the remarkably small number of «MDUL»really«MDNM» devoted analysts, who identify their lives with the science of |×/.  Still I am glad to tell you that my friend and ex‑pt Flügel has just finished an excellent book on Family Life,«FN1.××J. C. Flügel (1884‑1955), British psychologist and active participant in the psychoanalytic movement, wrote «MDUL»The Psychoanalytic Study of the Family«MDNM» (London: Hogarth Press, 1921).

» which will I think prove a textbook for some time (incest complexes and their various effect on later life).

May I ask you the following questions on War Shock, which I hope will be intelligible even though briefly put.  (1) How do you picture the relation of this narc. neurosis (a term which hitherto has been with us synonymous with psychosis) to Dem. pr..?  (2) In the peace Tr. Neur. what is the relation to Libido of the Angst produced after the shock as compared with that «MDUL»normally«MDNM» produced before a shock?  I suppose both are derived from narc. lib., with the same function of deadening stimuli (by the way, how do they do this?).  (3) In the War Neurosis do you conceive the conflict to be between the New Ego, non libidinous, and the Old Ego with its self love lib. (as I conceive it) or in what other relation could the lib. stand to the two ego ideals?

I am glad to say I have new life since seeing my dear friends in Switzerland, and am full of plans.

Yours affectionately always  Ernest Jones.

«MDUL»P.S.«MDNM»  I just get a letter from Brill, promising active and cordial support of the plans I sketched to him (and which he had already spontaneously suggested).  In N.×Y. the society has fallen to 8 members.  I gather the movement in America is more widespread and popular, but has few good leaders.  How we miss good old Putnam already.  Brill makes the strange suggestion that we found an Anglo‑American |×/ Association, with local branches.  I shall not agree to this, not even as regards the «MDUL»Journal«MDNM», for though this will be for Anglo American countries it should belong to the Internat. |×/ Assoc..  I have told him he must come to Holland in September.  He will write to you soon.
