Dear Jones

One day before I got your
dear wife’s letter I heard
of your operation and felt
rather struck by the serial-
ity. I expect a permanent im-
provement of your health
to come out of your experience
as a patient, while incom-
plete recovery is all I am
entitled to expect from
mine. There is so much work
before you and so many
good claims on life that
I prefer to think of
your illness as a short,
– I hope not too unpleasant –
episode.

Affectionately
yours
Freud
