    PROF. DR. FREUD

    WIEN, IX., BERGGASSE 19.

    April 18th 1919

    Dear Jones

The first window opening in our cage. I
can write you directly and a closed letter!
I was extremely glad to hear, that five years
of war and separation did not succeed
    in deteriorating your kind feelings
for our crew and very sorry, that your
health is not the same as your friend-
ship. But I hope the latter will recover
    as the former will remain.

I am extraordinarily obliged to you for bring-
ing with you so much of my daughters
things, she wanted them badly. We
have grown hungry beggars all of us here.
But you shall hear no complaints. I am
still upright and hold myself not
responsible for any part of the world’s
    nonsense. Psychoanalysis is flourishing I
am glad to learn from everywhere,
I trust science will prove a consolation
    for you too.

I agree completely with all your plans
and stipulations as far as known to me
by Rank. The affairs of ΨA are so
well provided by the commute, I may well
feel superfluity, ending to narrow the 33d
    year of my medical career.

Sorry to say, Freund, the latest member not the
slightest, is ill again and I am not yet sure if
I can help him. It is very sad that Hungary
is nearly cut off now; there is no assurance
to get a letter to or from our friends
there, or money is still laid up in a
    Hungarian Bank, nobody knows how
long such a state of things may last and
wether it will be relieved by a better one.

Kongress in autumn may well prove im-
possible under these circumstances, if Ferenczi
and Freund cannot leave their country, even
a meeting of the comité will be fusite.
As regards my person I am anxious to meet
you, let us say in Holland, but at this
moment traveling for one of us is nearly
out of question, till our plans depend
upon what improvements the next months
will bring, if there be improvements.

I thank you very much for having
restored to my handwriting its former
character. My last two productions „Ein
Kind wird geschlagen“ and „Jenseits des
Lustprinzips“, which you will have to
criticism one day, were written under
bodily pain caused by a bad pen.

Now write me soon and take my
    best love meanwhile
    Yours truly
    Freud
