INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PSYCHO‑ANALYSIS
3O November 1921 London W1
«IP0,0»Dear Professor:
«IP4,0»Thank you for your remarks about my letter on the September meeting and for your kindly wishes about our new place of residence. We are very happy here and it is well organised from the point of view of work, with much better arrangements. We have a little garden and overlook the park, the address being 42 York Terrace, Regent's Park, London, N. W. 1. It is only three minutes from my room in Harley St., which I still retain.
McCann had finally refused all reparation, and Unwin suggests that the enclosed document be circulated among the leading periodicals and libraries in America. Will you please let me know at your early convenience if I may have permission to add your name to the signatories. I think we should fight the American piracy«FN1.××Refers to a pirated version of Freud called «MDUL»Dream Psychology«MDNM», with a translation falsely attributed to M. D. Eder, published by James McCann of New York. The book was put together from English versions of Freud (1900a) by André Tridon of New York, see Jones (1922i; 1957a, pp. 49, 85; 1957b, pp. 51, 89‑90).» especially just now when there is every prospect that their laws on the subject will be changed; they are in a state of guilty conscience.
My Treatment of Mrs. Philipp came to a sudden and comical end. After five days she woke up at four one morning with the spontaneous realisation that her husband had been inconsiderate of her in regard to her household difficulties, and she woke him to tell him so. Nothing that I could say could convince her that this was an inadequate aetiology of epilepsy and she regarded herself as cured. Of course she felt better and her husband wrote thanking me for the successful course of psycho‑analysis!
After some months' analysis of Rickman's mother I have a chance of comparing her with his wife, much to the disadvantage of the latter, who is really quite devoid of grace and love. He has a very distorted picture of his mother, as of course you will have guessed; she is quite human.
About the Schriften.«FN1.××Regarding Freud, «MDUL»Collected Papers«MDNM».» Most of the Metapsychology and Technique articles are now translated. Egerton promised to attack the non‑medical articles in the first two volumes, but I have heard nothing further from him. The only part unallotted, therefore, is the medical part of these volumes, and if Anna would care to undertake these I should like nothing better and be very grateful to her. She could do all the first volume except the French ones, which Meyer has done (very badly).«FN1.××Several articles, originally published in French, were translated by M. Meyer in Freud, «MDUL»Collected Papers«MDNM», 1:42‑58, 128‑137, 138‑154.» I hope that her health is better now.
I must tell you the latest story of Loe. She replaced Trottie«FN1.××Loe's dog.» by a more obvious symbol, a cock, who always slept in her bedroom. A time came when she had to go away for a while, so that he had to take his place with the hens in the fowl‑coop. Lest, however, he should suffer from fear or loneliness in this unaccustomed environment she had her bed moved there also and slept there with him for the first two nights until he no longer found it strange. Of her health I have no news.
Practice is very full just now and I am trying to steer a couple of patients towards Vienna. I usually work nine hours a day, and only wish I could devote more time to scientific work. But I think none of my duties get seriously neglected, and we even manage occasionally to go to the theatre, not to mention fortnightly visits to Elsted.
With my very warmest regards yours always sincerely Ernest Jones
