Dear Professor,
«IP4,0»Very many thanks for your sympathetic letter. I was glad to hear from various sources that you yourself are past your trouble, and hope that you are not faced with the choice between letting it recur and giving up smoking; I trust that the golden mean, the British principle of compromise, will be sufficient for the case.
I am still in bed but am looking forward to getting about again, though it will be a few weeks before I am restored to full activity. An abdominal operation is not altogether uninstructive and brings home to one some aspects of life which one does not ordinarily realise fully. But it is a disagreeable experience, none the less.
You can imagine that I have no general news to give you, situate as I am, and I am restricting my business affairs to a minimum. But I want to ask you about one matter which ought to be regularized, namely, about the translation of the «MDUL»Vorlesungen«MDNM». You may remember that a contract was made between the Press and Allen and Unwin, but there has never been a formal one between the Press and yourself. I would suggest that one be arranged on the same terms as we did for the «MDUL»Jenseits des Lustprinzips«MDNM» and «MDUL»Massenpsychologie«MDNM», as is also being done in regard to the «MDUL»Sammlungen«MDNM». If you agree with this, would you please arrange it with Rank so that a contract can be drawn up.
I have got an invitation sent to Ferenczi to attend the Oxford Congress in July,«FN1.××Regarding the 7th International Congress of Psychology, see Jones (1923d).
» but have not yet heard whether he will accept it. It would be very delightful to have both him and Abraham here. For the pleasure of seeing you I must wait a month longer, till the end of August, but I am already looking forward to that greatly.
With kindest regards, Yours always affectionately, Ernest Jones
