Dear Professor Freud,

«IP4,0»Many thanks for your letter of Nov. 2O.  I am very grateful to you for taking the trouble of correcting the Hamlet.  Some parts of it must have been very difficult to translate, especially for Tausig who does not know English well.  That was impudent of him to change the title.  I have written to Deuticke, as you suggest.

I was horrified to think I had sent you as a novelty a story («MDUL»Gil Blas«MDNM») to which you had alluded in your writings, for I know your writings as a rule in great detail.  I do not find it in the Analerotik paper, unless it is the "Dukatenscheissers",«FN1.××"Shitter of ducats," see Freud (1908b, p. 174).

» a term I am not familiar with.  One more proof of your terrifyingly wide reading!

That was very interesting about your lady filled up with air.  The subject opens out very extensively.  Partly through two patients and partly independently I have got hold of a mass of material that it illuminates. The mythological parts you probably know, and I daresay most of the anthropological also, but perhaps you are not aware of the great extent that Hindoo Yogi doctrines have taken hold of a large class of Americans.  I am sending you a copy of a small book on "The Science of Breath",«FN1.××Three books on breath by Fletcher, Arnulphy, and Durville are mentioned in Jones (1914a), see Jones (1951, 2:298, n. 1).

» which I am sure will interest you greatly, although the Hindoo part itself will be familiar to you.  It is an interesting speculation as to the type of nonsense that will replace orthodox religion in time (a) psychical research, «MDUL»Schattenseele«MDNM» [shadow soul] from dreams, (b.) occultism, telepathy, «MDUL»Hauchseele«MDNM» [breath soul] from flatus, etc.  In one patient the connection between interest in occultism and anal curiosity was as plain as possible.  What impresses one of the importance of analerotik is its primitiveness, before the child knows of the existence of the vagina, semen etc., etc.  I think of a patient's remark: "I am always trying to get to the «MDUL»bottom«MDNM» of things".!  Will you let me write an article sometime for the «MDUL»Jahrbuch«MDNM» or «MDUL»Zentralblatt«MDNM» on the symbolism of Flatus, especially in its religious connections?« FN1.××See Jones (1914a).

»

I have got the first number of the «MDUL»Zentralblatt«MDNM», and am delighted with it.  It is full of good things, and is most promising for the future.  Such a journal for short notes was badly needed.  Perhaps we shall have one in English in a few years.

The American Ortsverein is going on well, though we shall not meet till May.  There are about twenty members, six of whom are English.  Stanley Hall and Adolf Meyer wrote to me most cordial approving letters.

Do you yet know when your methodik book will be out?«FN1.××See note 2 to letter 42.» I have not yet found a translator for Hitschmann.«FN1.××Hitschmann (1911).

»  A publisher this week asked me to write a book of 4OO pages on Freudian psychology, but I think it well to postpone this a couple of years.

Don't you agree?  Yours, E. J..
