Dear Professor Freud,
«IP4,0»Here we are, three miles from the frontier of the forbidden land, but in a lovely country. Still, the more beautiful are the things I see the more desolate and mournful do I feel, especially this week ‑‑ the anniversary of the fatal illness of my wife, with whom I had so often planned this journey on the way to Vienna.
Sachs is very well, and glad of our company. He must be very lonely. He has been at his best with his humour and wit. We spent two days or so with the Van Emdens in Luzern, and they accompanied us on the boat along the lake to Flüelen. We propose to stay here about a week and then go to Zurich. Before crossing the frontier I have to get my passport signed in Bern by the Austrian consul in the last 24 hours, also by the Swiss. In your telegram to me in London and in your letter to Sachs you say that you expect to be in Vienna in the last week of September. As there are so many arrangements to make, it makes a considerable difference if you mean the beginning or the end of that week, and I beg you to let me know as soon as you can decide.
We heard today from Rank. His wife and daughter, called Helene, are doing well.
We rejoice to think that you are having a pleasant and health‑restoring time in the midst of your family, and hope you will be able to get to Hamburg also. If you see Abraham, greet him warmly from me; I have written to him twice this year, but have had no answer yet.
Yours affectionately Ernest Jones.
