Dear Professor:
*IP4,0+Many thanks for your long letter of July 16th. I have signed the agreement with Unwin for the *MDUL+Vorlesungen*MDNM+; Flügel and I will revise it.
I entirely agree with all that you say about the *MDUL+Journal*MDNM+. Rank has already seven articles for the 2nd number, but I know the importance of gathering material as far ahead as is possible. When I am definitely appointed editor I can set about collecting a permanent staff of reviewers, translators, etc.. Will you be so good as to substitute something suitable for my remark at the end of Pierce Clark's article.*FN1.AAClark (1920, p. 160, n. 1).
+ I asked him for the article and so cannot now refuse it, impossible as it is.
You say you agree with the "second view" about the theoretical question. As far as my memory serves, this was the formulation I suggested; please contradict me if this is not so. If so, is not the pyramid analogy possibly misleading to some readers, who might infer that an actual pulling *MDUL+force*MDNM+ is at work.
I should be glad to have an answer to my questions about the Berlin lectures and the date of the Committee Meeting, for one has to make plans in due time nowadays. Also two points about the Congress, as we are drawing up the programme. Who would you like to preside at the business meeting, yourself, Abraham or myself? I wish you would do it. Have you yet decided the title of your paper, or shall I write *MDUL+Thema vorbehalten*MDNM+ [topic to be announced]?
The Congress promises well in all respects, good papers and I hope a good attendance; there are sixteen coming from England.
You will be sorry to hear that Col. Sutherland, who called on you once in Vienna, has just died in Calcutta from appendicitis.*FN1.AAColonel W. D. Sutherland, I. M. S. of India, member of the London Psycho‑Analytical Society and The British Psycho‑Analytical Society; contributed to Krauss's *MDUL+Anthropophyteia*MDNM+; visited Freud in March 1911, see letter 54.

Kitty is extremely well and is looking forward to seeing you here in September.
Yours always affectionately Ernest Jones
