Dear Professor,
Your letter of Nov. 1O arrived, after six weeks. It is now permitted to send letters through any friend in a neutral country.
I was «MDUL»so«MDNM» glad to see your handwriting again, to know that you are well, and to read your kind words to me. You know that you and |×/ are everything to me, especially now when life is otherwise so drear and empty. Tomorrow, New Year's Day, I shall be 4O, and life's greatest happiness is past, forever.
But do not fear that I shall lose heart for the work. That I find worth doing. In both England and America it has made great progress of late. Here it arouses general interest in every circle, and is even being taught in one medical school; the younger generation is eager to know more of it. In America several books have appeared, one good one by Frink on "«MDUL»Morbid Fears and Compulsions«MDNM»".«FN1H. W. Frink, «MDUL»Morbid Fears and Compulsions: Their Psychology and Psychoanalytic Treatment«MDNM», intro. J. J. Putnam (New York: Moffat, Yard, 1918).
» I have kept touch with Brill, who seems to be very successful both in practice and in appointments; he is evidently securing recognition in New York. I regret to send you the sad news that dear old Putnam died last month, heart failure during sleep; he was well and at work to the last.
With the many men who do not know German it will be necessary now to have a «MDUL»Journal«MDNM» in English. Jelliffe's "«MDUL»|×/ Review«MDNM»" is of course useless. Tannenbaum of New York arranged last summer to start a new journal,«FN1.×׫MDUL»Eros‑Psyche«MDNM».» which was ready to appear when I persuaded him to postpone it till after the war, on the ground that we must have an «MDUL»official«MDNM» organ of our societies (not a private venture) in touch with the «MDUL»Zeitschrift«MDNM» (? mutual translation of articles, etc.) and of course the International Association. That will be one of the many things I want to discuss with you when I am allowed to travel (which I fear «MDUL»may«MDNM» not be until after peace, in June), but I mention it now so as to give you time to think it over and send me your views.
I trust that before now Martin will have arrived safely. Please remember me to all your family. I send them and you the best possible wishes for a Happy New Year, and for a successful year in our work with a happy personal and scientific reunion. I hope you will write very soon again.
Yours always Ernest Jones.
