Dear Professor Freud,
«IP4,0»I am very grateful for your welcome letters. They were both singularly well‑timed. The first one you wrote not on hearing from me from London, but after waiting a week or two to observe my wife, which was just what I wanted. And yet you didn't wait to get my regular Toronto address, but sent it earlier so that I should be relieved at my most anxious time. This was very considerate of you. Now this morning comes the second one, with the good news about Lina, at a moment when I was anxiously awaiting my wife's first letter, which cannot arrive for another week.
About my own attitude in the matter I have no more to say, for I fully described it in my last letter and you evidently quite understand it.
As to my wife I was very gratified to hear your good reports, though I shall not be happy so long as any morphia remains; perhaps it will have disappeared by the time you get this. I am in complete agreement with your attitude of making her interests not only the first consideration, but the only one, to the exclusion of all else. I know that your code would allow you to do nothing else, and I would wish it in any case. I must take my chance of her coming back to me spontaneously, and I believe she will do so (though this may be merely narcissism on my part).
I had heard that Jung was in America this week, but only for three days; it is simply a financial expedition, but he took advantage of it to act vigorously on Hoch. He and I are fighting for the possession of Hoch's soul, which is a poor thing at the best, and I think I shall win, for I have an excellent friend (MacCurdy) as assistant to him and he gives him daily pin‑pricks. Jung has not written to me since Munich, and I do not intend to re‑open unless he does. His behaviour about my article in the «MDUL»Jahrbuch«MDNM» was indefensible and petty in the extreme.«FN1.××Jones (1912‑13).
» It is annoying, for I had planned a series of articles suited to the «MDUL»Jahrbuch«MDNM» (on the inter‑relations of the Triebcomponente), which now I shall not be able to publish.
Thank you further for the reprints, which came two days ago. It was very enjoyable renewing my acquaintance with the animism article,«FN1.××Part III of Freud (1912‑13).
» though as usual I wished it were twice as long. I enclose a quotation from Browning that shows an appreciation of infantile narcissism.«FN1.××In Jones (1916c) there is a passage quoted from Browning's "A Soul's Tragedy" which relates to the theme of the egocentricity of the unconscious and the mental attitude of the child, see Jones, «MDUL»Papers«MDNM», 2nd ed. 1918, p. 633.
» I am glad you pointed out how strongly the facts contradict the idea of primary Minderwertigkeit.«FN1.××Freud (1912‑13, p. 90, n. 2).
» By the way, it is interesting that I should have traced the "God‑complex" (Allmacht) to narcissism rather than simply to the Oedipus‑complex.«FN1.××Jones (1951, 2:246‑247).
» I must write the article I planned in Italy on the connections between the Allmacht der Gedanken in der Zwangsneurose, narcissism, and the anal‑complex (especially flatus).«FN1.××Jones (1914a).
»
There is not very much news from this side. There seems to be a "«MDUL»panikartige Flucht«MDNM»" [panic‑like withdrawl] proceeding in Boston, due to police action against the «MDUL»Journal of Abnormal Psychology«MDNM». I will tell you more about it when I hear the details. Putnam is rather nervous, as you might expect. My relations with Brill are very satisfactory, but I do not want to interfere with his field of action in New York, so I have refused three invitations from there, to address the Neurological Society, the Academy of Medicine, and to give a private course of twenty lectures. To be sure, I had other good reasons. Next month I go to Baltimore to take part in the opening of the Phipps Psychiatric Clinic (Adolf Meyer).«FN1.××Jones (1913d).
» Then I leave Toronto for Washington on May the 4th, and probably sail on the 1Oth. Of my work here I will write next week, when I expect to send you an article for «MDUL»Imago«MDNM».«FN1.××Jones (1913f).
»
Are you going to take an Easter holiday this year? Your mentioning Ferenczi and Corfu makes me think you are going there. I have not yet written to Ferenczi or Sachs, but must do so. Rank is a regular correspondent, and keeps me in touch. Are you going on with the «MDUL»Imago«MDNM» series of articles, or have you finished the first stage before proceeding to the second (Religion)?
Many thanks for your kind thoughts about England, which echo one of my deepest wishes. I do not deceive myself that it will be an up‑hill fight, for, as you know, I have a black mark to my name in London,«FN1.××There were actually two professionally embarrassing incidents, in which Jones was virtually accused of abusing children. For his own version of these events, see Jones (1959, pp. 145‑151).
» but I hope that by sitting tight and behaving well something will be accomplished in time, if not for myself, at least for |×/.
Yours always affectionately Jones.
