Dear Professor,
Many thanks for your letter of July 27th. I was very glad to hear from Rank that you have already benefitted from your holiday and hope you will get great enjoyment from it.
A letter came from Brill yesterday, mirabile dictu, saying that he was leaving on the 23rd for a visit to you and me. I trust this repentance will not be a fleeting one and am sure you will exact conditions before accepting it completely. It comes too late for him to play the chief American part as regards the Journal, for, following your instructions, I arranged with Frink that all the editorial work there should pass through his hands. At the same time I am not altogether surprised by the news and am hopeful of good results from it. I am trying to catch Brill on his arrival, for I may have left for Germany before he would be sailing again, which reminds me: could you please let me know the exact date of the Hildesheim meeting,[1] for travelling arrangements, tickets, visas etc. have to be arranged extraordinarily far in advance nowadays. Will it be from Sept. 23rd to 3Oth? I want to be back in England on Oct. 1st if possible.
I enclose a preface for the translation of the «MDUL»Jenseits«MDNM» which I hope you will approve of.«FN1.××Jones (1922a).
»
The matter of the American editorship has been very tedious and I will describe it in the Rundbrief,«FN1.××Rundbrief from Jones, 12 August 1921, summarizes the issue of selecting the three American editors for the «MDUL»Journal«MDNM» (Sigmund Freud Copyrights Ltd, Wivenhoe; and Rank Collection, Butler Library, Columbia University, N. Y. C.). In the end, Farnell was dropped (see letter 314), and Brill, Frink, and Oberndorf were listed on the title page of the «MDUL»Journal«MDNM», 2(1921).
» but as it is now satisfactorily settled I will not bore you with it further.
Mrs. Riviere consulted me about going to you in January and I advised her to write to you. I fear her motives are not of the best, but we can discuss the matter in September if you wish.
The Stracheys have made an excellent list of words for our projected Glossary and we have discussed the suitable translations of some of them. I shall probably consult you about a few of the most difficult terms; then I propose to publish it in the «MDUL»Journal«MDNM» at length with explanatory paragraphs after some of the terms.«FN1.××Jones (1924a).
» It will be of great value for translators and will help standardisation. By the way it was hardly fair to judge Miss Hubback's translation from that one example, for the work was done sketchily some five years ago with no thought of publication and has never been even read through again; she has greatly improved since that time.«FN1.××Freud (1920g), trans. C. J. M. Hubback.
» I sent it to Hiller to revise as he wanted some practice in translating and I thought this would be the easiest way, being helped both by having a preliminary sketch and also by having access to Rank.
Your wish that the first volume to be published should be the «MDUL»Krankengeschichten«MDNM» will of course be followed, though I suppose it will not be numbered the first.«FN1.××Freud, «MDUL»Collected Papers«MDNM», 3.
» I understand that you do not approve of taking the two Elementary Papers on Technique out of their position in the Introductory Papers and joining them to the older technical ones, but I am not clear whether you mean also that the two series cannot be bound in the same volume. To print the Introductory Papers alone in one volume would be making a very small book, and I do not know any other series that would go better with them than the Technique ones; they could of course be separately labelled and clearly distinguished Part I. and Part II. I shall remember your point about our Chinese rigidity, but, as in so many matters, I have to contend with pressure from both sides, so have to strike a balance.
I have only rapidly skimmed through the «MDUL»Massenpsychologie«MDNM» as yet, both because I want to finish a lot of work before leaving for the country at the end of this week and also because I want to read it through carefully at leisure in the country to see if it will stimulate me with ideas for a paper on this subject.
I have just finished re‑writing my Madonna Essay and have made some interesting new additions.«FN1.××Jones (1914a), see Jones (1923a, pp. 261‑359).
» Doing so has brought me some new ideas, which I believe to be important, concerning the psychological distinction between Christianity and older religions. Perhaps I shall be able next year to find time to work them up in a paper.
My wife is very well and is three months on the way to bringing another life into the world.«FN1.××Mervyn Jones.
