«IP0,0»Dear Professor Freud,

«IP4,0»The question I raised with Heller is in no sense a dissension, and I quite appreciate what you say about his character.  It was simply this.  Now that we hope to get more and better English abstracts I did not think it right that Rank should be burdened with the translation of all of them, as he has been doing up to now, so I thought of finding some suitable person in London to translate them regularly under my supervision, and then to submit them to Rank for a final correction.  I asked Heller if the «MDUL»Zeitschrift«MDNM» could bear «MDUL»part«MDNM» of the expense entailed in this plan, and he tells me the only money available is the Honorar, which of course goes to the reviewer only.  I then wrote that I would pay the whole cost if necessary, but that when the funds of the «MDUL»Zeitschrift«MDNM» are in a satisfactory enough condition they should contribute at least a part of it, to which he `agrees.  If I received any salary as Redacteur it could be devoted to these extra expenses, but I do not wish this if it would diminish Rank's.

«IP4,0»The other question is equally simple.  I got a letter from Sophie Durer (the lady you guessed the sex of at the Totem dinner in June)«FN1.××Celebration dinner held on 30 June regarding Freud (1912‑13), see Jones (1955a, p. 355; 1955b, p. 398).

» saying that she had written twice to Heller a month previously about the translation of my book, but could get no reply from him.  I wrote back saying I was forwarding her letter to him personally, and made the comment to him that his clerks had not been very attentive during his holidays.  About the question of translation I quite agree with you that it would help neither |×/ nor myself personally, so it is a matter of indifference to me altogether, and purely a question as to whether Heller thinks it worth while for financial reasons.  He makes the practical suggestion of translating a few of the less platitudenous articles, and so far as I am concerned he may do either this or nothing at all.

Today there were two agreeable arrivals by the post, your Scientia article, which is wonderfully clear and which whets my appetite for the second part«FN1.××Freud (1913j, pp. 165‑190): Part I = "The Psychological Interest of Psycho‑Analysis"; Part II = "The Claims of Psycho‑Analysis to the Interest of the Non‑Psychological Sciences."

» ‑‑ many thanks ‑‑, and the «MDUL»Zeitschrift«MDNM», where I was very proud to see my name;«FN1.××Jones, Ferenczi and Rank are listed on the title page as principal editors of the «MDUL»Zeitschrift«MDNM», 1(1913).

»  I have not yet had time to read it, but the index looks promising.

Are the Narzissm«MDUL»«MDNM» articles for the «MDUL»Zeitschrift«MDNM» or the «MDUL»Jahrbuch«MDNM» [ready], and could I hear something about the content?«FN1.××Freud (1914c).

»  I do not know what you have decided about the question of withdrawing from the «MDUL»Jahrbuch«MDNM»; so far as I can judge the reasons in favour would be much stronger than those against.  I feel that now all hope of reconciliation is over, as well as all wish on our side, the most urgent present need is a clarification of the differences, so that the world may decide whether Zurich represents a "progress" or merely a "watering" through reaction.

We propose to call a preliminary meeting for Oct. 23rd to constitute our group; I will let you know more details later.  Meanwhile I have discovered a very serious worker in Syria (!), director of the asylum at Lebanon, and also two more supporters in Scotland.«FN1.××Dr. H. Watson Smith, Lebanon Hospital, Asfurieh, Beyrut, Syria, and Dr. Leslie Mackenzie of Edinburgh joined the London Psycho‑Analytical Society, see «MDUL»Zeitschrift«MDNM», 2(1914):411.

»  Havelock Ellis refuses to join, on the ground that he belongs to «MDUL»no«MDNM» society on principle!

You will surely publish the paper you delivered at Munich?«FN1.××Freud (1913i).

»  It has stimulated my thoughts on many lines.  Think of the brutality and money interests of the Americans, in conjunction with their incapacity to love ‑‑ regression.

I am happy to hear that Rome was as delightful as ever; it is the right «MDUL»point d'appui«MDNM» from which to start another session's work.

Loe will not be in Vienna until about the 21st at the earliest, and begs you to reserve her some hours.  She has delayed the flat‑furnishing in a most unnecessary way, but what her motive is is too complicated a question for me to unravel, though I can partly guess.  She is fairly well, but has taken morphia several times for the period.

Yours very sincerely  Jones.
