«FL»Dear Professor Freud,

«IP4,0»I got your formal circular this morning,«FN1.××Freud's circular letter of 11 November 1912, announcing his resignation of the directorship of the «MDUL»Zentralblatt«MDNM» (Archives of The British Psycho‑Analytical Society, London).

» but had of course already sent my resignation to Stekel, and it is superfluous to say that I will throw myself into the new enterprise with a zest that needs no stimulation.  I also told Stekel that my Angst«MDUL»«MDNM» paper could not now be published in the «MDUL»Zentralblatt«MDNM».«FN1.××Jones (1913b).

»  It can go to the new journal if you will accept it.  It is satisfactory to think that the new journal will throughout represent our views with much less admixture of error than the «MDUL»Zentralblatt«MDNM».  What are you going to call it?  «MDUL»Monatsschrift f«MDNM». |×/.  Can you help me out of the following embarrassment in this connection?  I am just going to collect subscriptions for the American Association, most of which money is for the distribution of the «MDUL»Zentralblatt«MDNM».  As it is, I don't know what to do about it.  Can't the new journal be made the official organ of the Verein before the meeting in next September?  Perhaps you will discuss this with Jung, who arrives home next week (so I hear from his wife).  This would be just the occasion to show the use and function of a council of the Verein, if we had an effective one.

I want to thank you very deeply for the details about my wife, which were just the kind I wanted to know.  It was a great relief to read them.  I agree that the gain of treatment would be almost as great even if an organic element remained, but what you called her "fanatical" character makes her wish for "all or nothing"; she finds it difficult to reconcile herself to half‑results in anything.  You gave me good news about the progress, but today I get a letter from her, written two days after yours, which gives the reverse side of the medal ‑‑ no doubt provoked by her attack and other things.  She complains bitterly about you, that you do not trust her, do not believe her statements, and twist everything until she is quite confused in her mind.  I suppose the resistance had previously been concealed in a woman's deceptive way, by her pretending to agree to conclusions that in her heart she did not accept.  At all events, you probably have as much resistance to deal with now as will more than make up for its previous absence.  She is beginning to feel the treatment as an attack on her personality; she repeats that if she were allowed to conduct it herself, at her own speed, etc., she would be good and do her best (evidently anal‑complex) but to be "forced, bullied, and teased" against her will makes her feel broken and hopeless with no heart to give herself to the treatment.  And her chief cry is your want of faith in her, your doubt, disbelief and suspicion of what she says.  (Personally I have always found her invariably trustworthy in her statements, though of course she deceives herself as we all do).

I did not find it easy to answer her letter, though I have done so today.  I should, of course, keep out of the analysis, and leave everything to be settled between you two, but she turns to me very pityfully for comfort and help, so I had to make some «MDUL»general«MDNM» remarks, about the ambivalence of affects, etc..

She tells me that the urine was thrown away without her knowledge, but that Lina was sure it contained some blood.  I have many times found blood and pus in it, though with less frequency and in smaller quantities in the past three years.

I hope that this week will be better than the last, and shall very anxiously look forward to your next letter (perhaps you will find time to write on Sunday?).

I shall probably leave here on the 26th, having lost the little Angst I had of Rome.  Half of my Italian holiday at least will be spent in Rome, which I think is a fair proportion for a first "Rundreise" [round trip].  In what way did the photographs shake your confidence?  The other statues could only have served for the theme and form, not for the inspiration that constructed the Moses.

I have been referring to the Bible a little recently, and came across many interesting things.  Do you remember the following curious bringing‑together of teeth and child‑birth?  It is in Solomon's Song, spoken by the man.

"Thy teeth are as a flock of sheep, which go up from the washing, whereof everyone beareth twins, and there is not one barren among them."«FN1.×׫MDNM»"Song of Solomon," «MDUL»Old Testament«MDNM», 4:2.

I heard from Rank today.  He must feel very relieved to get his well‑won freedom.

Yours always affectionately  Jones.
