Dear Professor,
When you told me the story yesterday about your eccentric colleague,«FN1.××William Brown is written out in the margin.
» I was puzzled to understand his motive for coming, because I was quite sure that there was not the slightest idea of really being analysed. On thinking it over afterwards I realised the only explanation could be that he was tempted to repeat the experience with me of which I told you. Then after a dozen or so interviews he would be writing and lecturing all over the country about his analytic work with you, which would certainly do us all a great deal of harm because of his prominent position. Even as it is I shall not be surprised to hear him before long referring to an important discussion he had with you about the theory of free will, etc.
It was very good to see you looking so decidedly better yesterday.
Yours always, [Ernest Jones]«FN1.××Not Jones's signature, but signed "Ernest Jones" and initialed by secretary.»
