BRITISH PSYCHO‑ANALYTICAL SOCIETY
18 December 1924 London W1
Dear Professor,
«IP4,0»In your Rundbrief which arrived today you ask for an extra letter on the subject of Associated Memberships. In London, we are unreservedly pleased with this system, which gives us many advantages. Associate Members are elected year by year and thus can be released if they are not satisfactory. It gives a probation period to test whether they deserve promotion and membership and it affords an opportunity to have associated with us a few workers in other sciences who are seriously interested in psycho‑analysis without wishing either to practise or to profess a thorough knowledge of it. It occurs to me on the other hand that the need for such an arrangement may not be so urgent in a Society like that of Berlin, where the «MDUL»Lehrinstitut«MDNM» [training institute] affords ample guarantees for training and control.
Natrually [«MDUL»sic«MDNM»] my curiosity is piqued by your reference to Rank as I have no clue to its meaning.«FN1.××In Rundbrief, 15 December 1924, Freud had written that "in the Rank matter a surprising change occurred which is a delight to each of us ..." (Sigmund Freud Copyrights Ltd, Wivenhoe.) » My first thought was that he had given up analysis and accepted a position in a bank; my second that he had decided to settle in America. But the latter would be more «MDUL»erfreulich«MDNM» [pleasing] to you than to me.
I enclose an abstract from a letter of Brill's a month or two ago.
With all good wishes, Yours cordially, [Ernest Jones]«FN1.××Not Jones's signature, but signed "Ernest Jones" and initialed by secretary.»
