«IP0,0»Dear Professor Freud,

«IP4,0»Many thanks for your letter that came this morning.  With regard to the Hamlet I had already written to you, after hearing from Tausig, to say that it could only be a great pleasure to me that you would think it worth publishing in the «MDUL»Schriften«MDNM» series.  I had not arranged anything financially with Tausig, not knowing under what conditions he would publish it, but I will write to tell him to keep any fee that Deuticke may pay; it must have been a trouble to translate it.  Perhaps Deuticke will let me have a few copies that I could send to friends.

«IP4,0»It is very sad about Bleuler, and I am sure we all hope it will come right.  I suppose his personal complexes are reinforced by his jealousy of Jung, and by his desire to be accepted in the respectable circle of German psychiatrists.  Maeder tells me that he (B.) is just publishing a book; «FN1.××Bleuler (1911).

» do you know about it?  It seems unavoidable that there will be a fringe of half‑hearted supporters, and it is difficult to know what attitude to adopt towards them.  We have a similar problem here in another form, and should be very glad of your advice.  In our new Ortsverein Hoch wants to accept as members all those who have shown the slightest interest in |×A, even when they know nothing of it.  Brill and I are more inclined to be eclectic, but we must take in some like Meyer, Coriat and Onuf.«FN1.××Bronislaw Onuf (b. 1863), M. D. 1884 University of Zurich, charter member of the New York Psychoanalytic Society (12 February 1911).

»  We have two members in India, one, Berkeley‑Hill whom I mentioned to you,«FN1.××Owen Berkeley‑Hill (1879‑1944), British trained physician, entered the Indian Medical Service in 1907, would become a member of the American Psychoanalytic Association, and London and British Psycho‑Analytical Societies.» and Colonel Sutherland who writes in Krauss' «MDUL»Anthropophyteia«MDNM» under the pseudonym of Dr. S. of S..«FN1.××See Freud (1910f).

»  Hill sent me the first |×/ performed on an Indian, which the patient proudly wants to have published, but it is much too elementary ‑‑ little more than anamnesis.

Putnam's Washington paper has just been published in the Nov. no. of the «MDUL»Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease«MDNM», «FN1.××Putnam (1910a).

» and no doubt he will send you a reprint.  The discussion on it was published in the Oct. no., and I am sending you a copy of it.«FN1.×׫MDUL»Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease«MDNM», 37(1910):630‑639.

»  I also send a short account of a little Hamlet, whose Dummstellen [simulated foolishness] will interest you as coinciding with the explanation you gave me of that in the greater Hamlet.«FN1.××Jones (1910a, p. 111).

I have been invited to give an address on "some Freudian subject" before a joint meeting of the Chicago Neurological Soc. and the Chicago Med. Soc., and have chosen as title "A consideration of some criticisms of the |×A method of treatment";«FN1.××Jones (1911d).

» it is in January.  I think it is a good sign of the times, and I hope it may act as a stimulus in Chicago.  Pfister's Schrift was very interesting, though he was careful not to generalise.  I wonder if others of the clergy will follow his lead.  By the way, this week I had a patient sent to me from the Emmanuel Church in Boston!  I shall look forward to Graf's musical memoir with great interest.«FN1.××Pfister (1910); Graf (1911).

»  Can you find someone who would work up the symbolism of astrology and astronomy?  It is a very promising field.  My nightmare«FN1.××Jones (1912j).» is getting on slowly, as I have so much other work; it is a fearful task to select from the mass of material, but much of the work will come in useful later on with perhaps other articles.

Jung asked me to send him something for the «MDUL»Jahrbuch«MDNM» before the end of the year, but it will be impossible.  I will try to send him analyses of some cases of Zwangsneurosen by the spring.«FN1.××Jones (1912‑13).

»  One of them contains the infantile theory I spoke of, but, as that has expanded so much, perhaps it will be better to publish it in its own Zusammenhang [context] rather than separately in the «MDUL»Zentralblatt«MDNM».

It will be very good to hear from you on the subject of paranoia; was it your Dutch case that has inspired you?  Maeder has written to me much on the subject; he finds Ferenczi's presentation of «MDUL»Schrumpfung«MDNM» [shrinking] und Projektion very imperfect, and only one side of the problem.«FN1.××See Ferenczi (1909, p. 48), and Jones «MDUL»Papers«MDNM», 1st ed. 1913, p.250‑251.

»

Have you analysed many dreams of exceptional and entrancing beauty (at least subjectively so)?  I have had three in my own life, or perhaps more than I have forgotten.  One, years ago, concerned a wonderful cliff and sea scenery ‑‑ not enough details to analyse.  Another, two years ago, was playing, in the Grecian way, in a meadow with a young girl, the feeling being of extraordinary innocence and purity; analysis showed it was my young sister.  The third, a recent one, concerned an indescribably beautiful mass of architecture, palaces with marvellous corridors.  It turned out to be an infantile one about the genitalia of my parents, particularly my mother (anal)!  I wonder what is the explanation of that transcendent sense of beauty; it far surpasses anything I have experienced in waking life.

Friedländer's article and my criticism of Prince have been postponed till February.  Meyer and Hoch have articles in the Dec. no. of the «MDUL»Journal of Abnormal Psychology«MDNM»; «FN1.××Friedländer (1911); Jones (1911b); Meyer (1910b) and Hoch (1910).

»  I will send you a copy.

With my warmest regards,  Yours ever  Ernest Jones.
