Dear Professor,
«IP4,0»Thank you very much for your kind letter. I am gradually pulling round again, inspite of some minor complications, but I have a strong wish that London was not so distant from the South of France where it would be very pleasant to spend a week or so at present.
The following anecdote may entertain you. A certain Kronbach, apparently a lecturer at a Hebrew theological college in Cincinnati, has written a book on the psycho‑analysis of Judaism and has sent me a few pages of it for me to correct any errors in the account he gives of psycho‑analysis itself. From them I should judge that he has a very slender acquaintance, especially of understanding, with the subject, but to my great astonishment the opening sentences of his final chapter are: "The one conclusion [persuasion] to which we are inevitably impelled is that there should be generous financial provision for psychoanalytic research...... Liberal subventions are needed enabling gifted analysts to devote themselves entirely to investigations along rigidly scientific lines."«FN1.××The monograph was an offprint from Abraham Cronbach, "The Psychoanalytic Study of Judaism," «MDUL»Hebrew Union College Annual«MDNM», 8‑9(1931‑32):605‑740; the passage is taken from p. 728. »
That he is a born optimist is shown further by the following quotations: "Who knows but, aided by psychoanalysis, we might reckon more successfully with such problems as Temple attendance, satisfactory devotions and sermons, inspiring religious instruction, Jewish loyalty, social mindedness or whatever else may be the conundrum that the religious worker is expected to solve..... The person who will contribute money for religio‑psychoanalytic inquiry will have entered upon the way «MDUL»par excellence«MDNM» in which religion can be furthered by money."
Next week I am sending a circular to the members of the International Training Sub‑Commission«FN1.××This committee had been formed during the 11th Congress of the International Psychoanalytic Association, Oxford, 27‑31 July 1929, see «MDUL»Journal«MDNM», 10(1929):525.» with which I hope you will be in full agreement.
With my kindest regards, Yours always, Ernest Jones
