«IP0,0»Dear Professor Freud,
«IP4,0»Ferenczi, whose good letter arrived this morning, suggests that I should write combined letters to you two, so as to save time; if I hear from both of you in return I shall get the best of the bargain. By the way, he says he has told you something in a general way of my B'pest analysis. If you have any comments that occur to you, I should be glad to hear them.
«IP4,0»Enclosed is a copy of the paper I proposed reading at Munich;«FN1.××Jones (1914b).
» perhaps you would be so good as to let me know of any amendments you suggest. I am not satisfied with the part dealing with Jung directly. When I say I cannot understand why he goes on analysing phantasies that are purely secondary in nature, and not causal, he can easily reply: because the Libido and energy necessary for the performance of the «MDUL»Aufgabe«MDNM» [task] have got anchored there and have to be released through analysis. This is not easy to meet without overstepping the bounds of therapeutics and dealing with other parts of his "theory".
I hear with joy that you are reading a paper at Munich, and am eager to know the subject.«FN1.××Freud (1913i).
»
The onesided account of the |×/ debate in the «MDUL»Times«MDNM», «MDUL»Neue Freie Presse«MDNM» (which Rank sent me), etc., was due to the fact that no reporters were present, so that they wrote their account purely from the printed Rapporte of Janet and Jung that were handed to them.«FN1.××Ellenberger (1970, pp. 817‑819) in fact relies heavily on the newspaper accounts in his recreation of this episode to challenge Jones's version of the story, see note 5 to letter 133.
» I smiled to think of your lack of curiosity as regards the latter. The olympic calm of S. Martino contrasts vividly with the turmoil of London.
The chief news from here is that today I signed the lease of my flat (69, Portland Court, London W.), so that at least my practice will again have a "local habitation and a name" ‑‑ let us hope it will not be the "airy nothing" to which this phrase was first applied. I expect to move in by the end of September, so that Loe will get to Vienna about the same time as yourself.
Havelock Ellis wants the book for his series to be 5‑6OO pages long, and chiefly non‑medical, so that it will be a big job to do it well as it should be done. I believe it would produce a wide impression here, for the time is very ripe. One constantly sees references to |×/ in the better‑class magazines and literary journals. They are usually highly complimentary, with that respect for the distant that is likely to change when matters are brought to closer quarters. However, it is good that the start is in a serious and acknowledging tone.
Loe is going on better, and there is no doubt they will marry next May; even the later movements seem decided. The Jones family all sail for America on Sept. 3rd, the father having finally decided, after much wavering, not to go to Vienna. He has fixed delusions that his children are all conspiring to injure him, and he has a J. J. P. complex in regard to his youngest daughter, who happens to dislike him.«FN1.××i.e. James Jackson Putnam's Griselda Complex, referring to Putnam's incestuous attraction towards his own daughter, see Putnam (1913).
» Herbert Jones has behaved splendidly with him and the sisters, doing everything possible. In regard to Loe and myself he has greater difficulty, as he is still intensely jealous of me and wants to marry her at once (Please do not tell Loe that you know this, for she wants to write to you herself, though I doubt if she will do so yet awhile).
Tell Ferenczi that the Orchestral Concert season has just commenced here, and that I have a season ticket and go every evening. So even in London there is some relaxation, though in this hot weather I am greatly missing the open‑air life of B'pest. Other personal news is that yesterday I had a septic tooth‑root removed, which I am hoping may have been the cause of my chronic joint trouble. I hope yours is better in S. Martino. Have you thought of the possibility of this aetiology?
Other news at present have I none, so I will close with wishing you both (and all your family) a most agreeable time in the Tirol, and inspiration from mutual conversation.
Yours Jones.
