*FL+Dear Professor:

*IP4,0+I am glad you approved of my letter to Brill, and will let you know as soon as there is any response.

So your keenness detected the slight note of irritation in my letter, which I had hoped I had succeeded in suppressing altogether.  It was a reaction to a number of points in Rank's dictatorial manner and conduct of late which have given me a little difficulty in dealing with internally, I hope with success.  As Abraham remarked in his last letter, we must make great allowances for the strain Rank is under at present and for the impatient restlessness of his disposition, which has its advantages as well as its disadvantages.

I think it is an excellent idea to reward Rank with some honour for the work he has done in starting the *MDUL+Journal*MDNM+, though I hope he will be relieved of this when Hiller is in Vienna, and I have been planning to get both him and Ferenczi elected as Honorary Members of the British Society.  There is much to be said also for your idea of making him one of the assistant editors of the *MDUL+Journal*MDNM+, though I am not quite sure that it would be wise policy to increase the foreign associations of the *MDUL+Journal*MDNM+ just yet until the Americans are selected and our basis more securely established, for there has been much criticism in the public here of the foreign appearance of the get‑up of the *MDUL+Journal*MDNM+ (foreign type of printing and errors, etc.).

As for the Kola business I have not heard any valid arguments in favour of the combination, but I have found a good one for myself ‑‑ namely, that it will give me a much‑needed excuse to withdraw from the business and commercial side of our activities, of which I am quite as tired as you, and devote myself more to the scientific side.

I know Rad~ó fairly well and hope he will be of great use to Rank.  He has certainly great activity and capability, though I do not think Ferenczi found it too easy to keep him in order.

It is a pity that Berkeley‑Hill's article*FN1.AAO. Berkeley‑Hill, "A Short Study of the Life and Character of Mohammed," *MDUL+Journal*MDNM+, 2(1921):31‑53.

+ is not better, but I should be sorry to refuse it altogether, for he is very sensitive and I asked him to write it for the *MDUL+Journal*MDNM+ (he is a close personal friend of mine); also one should remember that he has done much for psa in India and made a serious financial sacrifice to help the Press in its early days.  Would you like me to write to him, suggesting the points you mention which he could investigate further?  I should be glad of your opinion on this.

I am overcome with excessive work and am looking forward to a few days at Christmas with my family, whom I rarely see.  My wife has had a feverish attack this week, but is better today.  I hope you will find Anna well and stronger on her return from Berlin.

With my kindest regards  yours always affectionately  Ernest Jones
