Dear Professor,

«IP4,0»In "These Eventful Years" there can be no question of the author's responsibility.  I was only referring to the slang Americanisms (such as "Right now I want to say", etc.) which occur in it.«FN1.××Freud (1924f).»

I was very glad to hear that the Verlag and Zeitschrift changes had been brought about so smoothly.  It had given me anxious thought, for otherwise awkward possibilities stood in sight in the future as no one but you could have the authority to deal with the matter.  In the new arrangement I entirely concur.  How much trouble Rank will give me in America (by opposing Jelliffe's Review to the Journal) is another question; I have trouble enough as it is with the numerous malcontents there, and am now placing all my faith in Brill to help us.

I know well what a grievous blow this must all have been to you, dear Professor, and can only wonder at the noble fortitude with which you have borne it.  Nor must I pass it by without a word about poor Rank.  Although his loss bears most of all on you, I can genuinely say that I am as sorry I was right as you are yourself.  Your words were, it is true, no surprise to me, for bearing the brunt of his neurotic behaviour in these last years forced me to think deeply about him and to recognise the situation.  My one hope was that you should never know, and my endeavours to prevent this cost me dearly in many ways.  But I was throughout very fond of Rank, and among the foremost to praise his valuable qualities, so that I too suffer an intense regret at the course fate has chosen.  I still wish him well in his future life, though I fear he has not chosen an easy path.

To turn for a moment to a happier topic.  Working through your writings has called my attention to many interesting early passages in which were foreshadowed later developments.  Of these I may mention four: (1) Unconscious sense of guilt is mentioned in Zwangshand. u Religionspsych. 19O7.«FN1.××Freud (1907b, p. 123).

» (2) Phallic stage of inf. gen. organization is clearly described in the last pragraph of Disp. z. Zwangsn. 1913.«FN1.××Freud (1913i, pp. 325‑326).

» (3) Active therapy in phobias, Zukunftige | /[sc]her. 191O.«FN1.××Freud (1910d, p. 162‑164).

»  This has since been quoted, I think, by Ferenczi.  (4) Strafbestreben des Ichs in hysteria comes in Das Unb. 1915.«FN1.××Freud (1915e).

The best news came today from Eitingon, via Abraham.  It was that you were very well and active.

Yours always devotedly  Ernest Jones
