Dear Professor,
«IP4,0»We were very pleased to get your permission to acquire the English rights of the two books in question and I have asked the Hogarth Press to enter in communication with Martin. Strachey has volunteered to translate the '«MDUL»Hemmung, Sympton und Angst«MDNM»', which is very gratifying. He and his wife are doing very useful work at present in an extensive revision of our Glossary.«FN1.××A. Strachey (1943).

I am reluctantly inclined to think you are right about my proposal of a Gedenkbuch. It would be useless to think of any proposal that would not give you pleasure, and I dare say you can guess that the risks of invidiousness in my proposal might result in considerable jealousy and ill feeling. We shall probably fall back on the photograph suggestion, which strikes me as a very interesting one, with many possibilities in it. Fortunately for you Eitingon will not be President at the time of your birthday. I think you know that I share more fully your quiet attitude about ceremonial occasions.
McDougall gave three lectures on you recently at University College,«FN1.××McDougall (1936).
» obviously proceeding from hurt homosexual vanity; their theme was how little you had taken his important work into account. You had appropriated his theory of suggestion without acknowledgment and had now given up all your back views, e.g. the Unconscious, the Oedipus complex, etc., reverting to a level of knowledge which he could have conveyed to you a quarter of a century ago! A philosopher called Joad gleefully took up the theme for his own purposes and published an extremely muddled and absurd article in the «MDUL»New Statesman«MDNM» a couple of weeks ago.«FN1.××Cyril Edwin Mitchinson Joad, "Psychology in Retreat," «MDUL»New Statesman and Nation«MDNM», 9(1935):956‑957.
» The editor wanted me to write an article in reply, but I contented myself with a pointed letter of reply. I have heard since that in the first week after the article appeared, the editor received no fewer than 193 letters, every single one of which was on your side.
With kindest regards Yours always [Ernest Jones]«FN1.××Not Jones's signature, but signed "Ernest Jones" and initialed by secretary.»
