Dear Professor:

«IP4,0»I have been away for a convalescing holiday in Wales, and am glad to say that I have made an excellent recovery from my illness, with the unfortunate exception of my cursed rheumatism.

It will be an interesting experiment for us to meet in August without your presence, but I trust that you will not regard it as a precedent.

I am sorry to say that Press affairs are going badly, partly because of the difficulty of getting things done in Germany, and partly because there is no suitable man with the time to manage the whole affair.  Rickman has the time, but sadly lacks the "push" and energy necessary.

I often wonder how you reply to Day's screeds,«FN1.××i.e. Daly's prolonged tirades.

» for I suppose he writes to you at the same length as to me.  Money‑Kyrle came to see me recently.  I found him very greatly improved in steadiness and confidence, and have no doubt he will complete his cure in the coming year.

I read your «MDUL»Ich und Es«MDNM» with enormous interest.  You take us into deep waters.  It will need another reading and some reflection before I could say anything in the way of comment, except that I am inclined to think the experiment might be tried of extending the repression principle to cover also the Es (which must be not only painful but also burdensome if admitted to consciousness).

The Teufelsneurose«FN1.××Freud (1923d).

» was charming and obviously aroused your personal interest.  It was a happy idea to seek yet another field for confirmation of your theories, like observation of children and study of anthropology.  By the way, «MDUL»à propos«MDNM» of your identification of God and devil on S. 14 (ref. to Reik) you will find interesting etymological and other proofs of this in my «MDUL»Alptraum«MDNM» («MDUL»Schriften«MDNM» XIV, S. 86, etc.);«FN1.××Jones (1912j, p. 86).

» similarly your suggestion on S. 15 about «MDUL»Hexenprozesse«MDNM» [witch trials] I had carried out by making this devil‑father identification the basis of my incest theory of witchcraft.«FN1.××See Freud (1923d, p. 87, n. 1), where he later partially acknowledged this contribution of Jones in a footnote.»

I hear today from Ferenczi that he is also coming to the Oxford Congress.«FN1.××The 7th International Congress of Psychology, Oxford, 31 July 1923.»  It will be a special pleasure to see both him and Abraham in England, and I wish that your long‑due visit were not so delayed.  We shall of course give them a great welcome, and the Society also is already making arrangements to that effect.

I hope that the stay in Gastein will be as successful as usual in giving you the needed recuperation and that you will derive great pleasure from it as well.

With all my best wishes,  yours always affectionately  Ernest Jones
