Dear Professor,
«IP4,0»Your most interesting letter of Feb. 18 came yesterday. In between you have probably had news of me from Rank and Sachs, whom I hope to see within another 2‑3 weeks. I am afraid Vienna is as yet impossible, but luckily the peace decisions are being hastened so that probably I shall be able to come by June or July. I cannot help picturing you in England after the war, being well looked after and working in comfortable conditions; I will not pretend there is no personal interest in the picture. Your idea about Martin has also occurred to me, but I can as yet only promise the will to keep it well in mind and to seek some one who may pass that way ‑‑ perhaps the Eders on their way to Palestine this month can make a detour. Tell Anna I will do my best about her things, and will certainly bring a few things, but luggage and travelling difficulties are so great that the less she expects the less she will be disappointed. I agree to write dear old Putnam's obituary, and have already sent three letters to America to collect proper data; I understand you already have the photograph?
Your stenographic remarks on the war neuroses are very valuable, and I think I can expand them in my mind. As you guess, my interesting analytical experience gives me much more to say than I put in my article, where I only dropped a hint for those who have "ears to hear"; it was given before a non‑analytical audience, which fact I hope the indulgent readers will remember when it has the honour to appear in more technical surroundings.
Did you approve of my criticism of Silberer in the symbolism paper?«FN1.××Jones (1916a), see especially Jones, «MDUL»Papers«MDNM», 2nd ed. 1918, pp. 178‑179.» The cloven hoof is there, but it was hard to find and I am not yet satisfied that I have sufficiently defined it. The early part had as paradigm the Priapus‑Fest drawing on the cover of "Punch", but they threatened to prosecute me for libel if the reference was not cut out, which it unfortunately had to be; could a footnote (editorial) be added to the translation?«FN1.××In Jones (1916a, p. 187), «MDUL»Zeitschrift«MDNM», 5(1919):252, and in the later versions (Jones, «MDUL»Papers«MDNM», 2nd ed. 1918, p. 137; and 3rd ed. 1923, p. 162), the lines in question are identical: "... those, such as the goat, the ape, and the ass (the animal sacred to the worship of Priapus, with which the figure of Punchinello is constantly brought into association), which are contemned as ridiculous and comic."»
I hear some things from Holland are detained by the Censor, but expect to get them soon, and am looking forward.
Yours always affectionately Ernest Jones.
«MDUL»P.S.«MDNM» Of course you will have heard from Ferenczi all about the society, which is very promising. I have analysed 6 out of the 11 myself, so am in good contact.
