Dear Professor:

«IP4,0»I am glad to confirm the news in my last letter that my neuritis is distinctly better, and hope that you are in the best of health.

I am on the committee of the International Congress of Psychology that is to be held at Oxford on about July 27, and have been requested to ask you if you would honour the Congress with a paper (of course in German).  I am sure you would receive a good welcome if you decide to come.«FN1.××Freud did not offer a paper, but see Jones (1923d).

»  We are trying to get the German and Austrian Governments to pay the expenses of those invited from these countries.

This week I finished the feat of comparing every word of the Erste «MDUL»Sammlung«MDNM» with the translation, and there must have been very few sentences where I was not able to improve the translation and style, for Mrs. Riviere seems to have lost some of her enthusiasm for detail.  The Zur Geschichte«MDUL»«MDNM»«FN1.××Freud (1914d).» I hope to do by Easter and then the first volume of your «MDUL»Collected Papers«MDNM» will be sent to press; there is every hope of its appearing before the public this summer.  May I ask your help with one little point?  On S. 226, line 17, does "an denen" refer only to "Faktoren" or to "Masturbation oder Pollution" as well?«FN1.××Freud (1906a, p. 272), «MDUL»G.W.«MDNM» 5:150.»

One matter that has become quite clear in my three cases of female homosexuality whose lives are so intertwined with one another is the equal importance in both the masculine and feminine types of the identification between the loved woman and the mother, though the mechanism is different in the different types.  By the way, one of them has a typical beating phantasy (a mother beats a daughter, both strangers), with the usual guilt, etc. Hermann B., the husband of one of your patients, is at present complicating the situation by falling in love with one of the three.

I hear indirectly that Loe has returned to London, for Herbert Jones did not obtain the hoped‑for benefit by living in the country.  He still suffers from obscure abdominal symptoms, and has just produced another book of poor verse.«FN1.××See Herbert Jones, «MDUL»Finlay«MDNM» (London: John Lane, 1923).  Other books by H. Jones, by the same publisher, included,  «MDUL»The Well of Being«MDNM» (1920), «MDUL»The Blue Ship«MDNM» (1921), and «MDUL»Romanel«MDNM» (1922).

»

Anna probably knows from Hiller that her «MDUL»Imago«MDNM» article is appearing in the current number of the «MDUL»Journal«MDNM»; it has been well translated.«FN1.××A. Freud (1922).

With kindest wishes  yours very affectionately  Ernest Jones
