Dear Professor:
«IP4,0»Thank you for your telegram.«FN1.××Telegram missing. » I hope that Dr. Bieber is now in Vienna. I had of course inquired about fees, but gathered that he could only pay $5 if the period was long.
I write just before the expected advent of Rank. His having to wait in Holland is largely his own fault, but one cannot wonder that so much contact with the political atmosphere of Vienna has impaired his contact with the outer world. We had the pleasure of seeing much of Van Emden and Van Ophuijsen last week here, and introduced them to the members of the committee of our society.
I was greatly distressed to hear the terrible news about poor Von Freund, and also for your sake, for I know something of what it means to you. About death I find there is nothing to say. Nature has omitted to provide us with any means of dealing with the idea. One's attitude is throughout negative.
Loe has been extraordinarily kind about Rank. She would even have gone to Holland to help him over the tedium of waiting, only that her husband is ill. They cannot go to America on account of this. Have you yet heard of her scheme for presenting you with a furnished house in the Hague (Kobus's, he having gone to live in Palestine), if you will consent to live there permanently?
I do not know what to do with the patients who come for treatment, having already filled up the hours of all my colleagues. One today, a well‑to‑do Jew sent to me from Palestine by Eder, has cyclothymia, and I cannot trust any one here to treat such a case. He refused to go to Vienna, although he speaks German well, so I shall have to send him to Van Emden, as he is willing to go to the Hague. If you have any thought of moving to Holland I beg you to telegraph me, which will be in time to keep him for you.
With warmest greetings Yours affectionately Ernest Jones.
«IP0,0»«MDUL»PS:«MDNM» On account of the Americans returning to work I think it important that the congress be held not later than the 6th of Sept., and it is high time that we notified them so that they can book berths. Will you please let me know if you agree to this? You have doubtless already got my letter about Abraham's Berlin suggestion.
